History

As historians, pupils at Deanery are inspired to explore the past with curiosity and critical thinking. We aim to develop their understanding of how people lived, how societies changed, and how historical events have shaped the world we live in today. Pupils are encouraged to think like historians—asking thoughtful questions, examining evidence, and making connections across time.

Our curriculum builds chronological understanding and historical perspective, helping pupils to recognise cause and effect, continuity and change, and the significance of key individuals and events. We want our pupils to develop the confidence to interpret sources, consider different viewpoints, and present their findings with clarity and purpose.

Through engaging topics and enquiry-based learning, pupils explore local, national and global history. They learn to appreciate the diversity of human experience and reflect on how the past influences their identity and values today.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, pupils begin to develop a sense of time and change through stories, role play, and exploration of their own lives and families. The curriculum encourages curiosity and independence, laying the foundations for historical thinking and enquiry.

Our curriculum overview outlines the historical knowledge and skills pupils will develop each year, ensuring a clear progression from EYFS to Year 6. It also includes opportunities for pupils to reflect spiritually, considering how history helps us understand human nature, resilience, and the impact of choices and beliefs across time.

History at Deanery is more than learning about the past—it’s about understanding the present and shaping the future.
