Computing

At Deanery, we want every child to flourish in a digital world. Computing helps children to become confident, creative and responsible users of technology. Through exciting, hands-on lessons, children learn how computers and technology work and how they can use them to solve problems, create and communicate.

We aim to give children the knowledge and skills they need to use technology wisely and safely, making links with maths, science and design & technology. We also encourage children to think about how technology can be used to make a positive difference in the world — showing care, compassion and respect for others, in line with our Christian values.

Our approach to computing supports learning that builds wisdom. Children are encouraged to think carefully about the choices they make online, to question the information they find and to use technology thoughtfully and purposefully. We help children to understand that their digital actions can have an impact on others and that using technology kindly and responsibly reflects our belief that everyone is made in the image of God.

Speaking and listening (oracy) are important parts of our computing lessons. Children are given opportunities to explain their ideas, work together on projects and share what they have learned. Alongside this, we focus on developing vocabulary, helping children to use the correct computing language with confidence.

In Early Years, computing is introduced through play and exploration. Children use technology to support their curiosity and creativity, helping them to become independent learners who are ready for Key Stage 1. Our Early Years and Key Stage 1 teams work closely together so that children’s learning builds smoothly as they move through the school.

Keeping children safe online is a key priority. Online safety is woven through all of our computing lessons and is also taught through PSHE and Safer Internet workshops. We teach children to make safe and respectful choices online and to know what to do if something worries them. Parents can also find support and guidance through the National College for Online Safety and the free #DITTO magazine, which shares helpful advice about keeping children safe online.

Our computing curriculum also helps us build links with our local community. We encourage children to share their learning with families and take part in projects that show how technology can be used to serve others.

At the heart of all our teaching is our Christian vision: that every child is unique, loved by God and has the potential to make a positive difference in the world. Through computing, children learn that technology can be used creatively and thoughtfully — to connect, to inspire and to bring light into the lives of others.
