As scientists, our pupils engage in a carefully considered science curriculum that nurtures a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They develop an understanding of how the scientific community contributes to our past, present and future, and how science continues to shape the world around us.
We aim for pupils to build a deep and complex knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, while developing a broad range of skills in working scientifically and beyond. In an increasingly scientific and technological age, our curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to thrive in modern life.
Science learning at Deanery is rooted in real-world relevance. We make meaningful links between classroom learning and pupils’ lives outside school, helping them make sense of the world they live in. Through scientific enquiry, pupils explore how new knowledge and innovation can help solve global challenges and improve lives.
We recognise that young children are naturally curious and passionate about learning. We believe that all children can be scientists by following their own questions and interests. A scientist observes, questions, creates hypotheses, experiments, records data, and analyses findings. Our curriculum encourages critical thinking and empowers pupils to ask the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the world around them.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, science is introduced through exploration, play and discovery. Children are encouraged to observe changes, ask questions, and investigate the world around them using their senses. The Characteristics of Effective Learning underpin our EYFS provision, helping children develop the foundations of scientific thinking in a way that is meaningful and engaging.
Our curriculum overview outlines the progression of scientific knowledge and skills from EYFS to Year 6, ensuring pupils experience challenge, depth and continuity in their learning.
It offers opportunities for spiritual development, as pupils experience awe in the complexity of life, reflect on the beauty and order of the natural world, and consider their place within it with curiosity and respect.
