Design and Technology

As designers and technologists, we engage, inspire and challenge pupils to think creatively and critically about the world around them. We equip them with the knowledge and practical skills to design, make and evaluate purposeful products that solve real problems, considering function, aesthetics, and sustainability.

Our curriculum empowers pupils to become confident innovators and problem-solvers. Through hands-on experiences, they learn to experiment with materials, tools and techniques, developing resilience and resourcefulness. We aim to foster a sense of pride in their creations and encourage them to reflect on their work and the work of others with curiosity and respect.

The curriculum overview outlines the progression of learning across each year group, ensuring pupils build on prior knowledge and skills. It also includes opportunities for pupils to reflect spiritually, considering how design and technology can impact lives and communities.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), our intent is to provide a practical and playful approach to learning. Pupils are encouraged to explore and challenge themselves through open-ended tasks that promote independence and creativity. The Characteristics of Effective Learning are embedded throughout our EYFS curriculum, recognising that children learn in diverse ways. All planned learning experiences support pupils in developing these characteristics and accessing the curriculum independently.

Design and Technology at Deanery is more than making—it’s about imagining, exploring, and creating with purpose.
