Design and Technology

In Design and Technology, pupils flourish by learning to shape ideas, materials and environments with creativity, wisdom and purpose. As designers and technologists, we encourage pupils to think deeply about how products influence everyday life and how thoughtful design can improve the world around them. Our curriculum nurtures wisdom by helping pupils understand not only how things are made but why design decisions matter by considering function and aesthetics.

Oracy plays a central role in this learning. Pupils are given frequent opportunities to discuss ideas, explain processes, present their outcomes and evaluate their work. Through this they learn to articulate their thinking clearly and confidently using subject-specific vocabulary that is explicitly taught, revisited and embedded across all year groups.

Hands-on experiences empower pupils to experiment with tools, materials and techniques which builds resilience, curiosity and resourcefulness. We celebrate the pride they take in their creations and encourage respectful reflection on different design choices.

Spiritual development is woven throughout. Pupils are encouraged to consider the wonder of human creativity and the way thoughtful design can bring joy, dignity and wellbeing to others. Through moments of reflection, pupils appreciate how innovation and compassion can work together to transform lives.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) pupils flourish through a practical, playful approach. Open-ended tasks encourage independence, creativity and problem-solving supported by the Characteristics of Effective Learning. Children explore freely, make choices and discover their abilities by laying strong foundations for future design, thinking and self-expression.

Design and Technology at Deanery is more than making - it is imagining, communicating and creating with wisdom, purpose and heart.
